and Bylaws
FOREWORD
The National College
Athlete Honor Society was founded at DePauw University, Greencastle, Indiana, on May 17,
1996, as a student-athlete honor society for the recognition of high academic achievers
and sport letter winners at the collegiate level.
PREAMBLE
The purposes of this
organization shall be:
To encourage and reward
high academic scholarship of college athletes at four-year accredited colleges or
universities.
To recognize outstanding
academic achievement by intercollegiate varsity sport letter winners.
To encourage good
citizenship, moral character, and friendship among the high academic achievers in college
athletics.
To recognize and honor
the individual athlete, his/her team, sport, athletic department, and college or
university.
To mentor and provide
leadership to other athletes.
ARTICLE ONE
Name and Scope
Section One: The
name of this organization shall be:
National
College Athlete Honor Society.
The Greek letters shall
be:
Chi Alpha Sigma.
Section Two:
The
society is an organization of college athletes with high academic achievement, exemplary
character, and positive attitude who have earned a letter(s) in their respective
sport(s).
ARTICLE TWO
Motto and
Watchwords
Section One: The
motto of this society shall be:
Excellence in
Athletics and Academics.
Section Two: The
watchwords of this society shall be the four A's:
Athletics, Academics,
Achievement, Attitude.
ARTICLE
THREE
National Council
Section One: The
control of this honor society shall be vested in the National Council.
Section Two: The
seven members shall be selected by the executive director from member colleges and universities and shall be
appointed to a staggered three-year term. Four members shall constitute a quorum of
the National Council.
Section Three: Any
proposed changes of the Constitution and Bylaws shall be adopted by the National Council.
Section Four: The
National Council shall meet yearly.
ARTICLE
FOUR
Local Chapters
Section One: College
and universities who are members of the NCAA or NAIA are eligible to apply for a
charter for a local chapter.
Section Two: Each
chapter shall pay a charter fee and an annual renewal fee determined by the National
Council.
Section Three: Duly
chartered local chapters shall conform to this Constitution as set forth by the
National Council. Failure to do so may result in the loss of the charter.
Section Four: The
DePauw University chapter of the National College Athlete Honor Society is
designated the Alpha Chapter of Chi Alpha Sigma and is in the state of
Indiana. Each chapter shall be
assigned a successive letter of the Greek alphabet,
and its position on the state roster shall be indicated by the order of its
installation.
ARTICLE
FIVE
Membership and
Initiation
Section One: Membership
in local chapters is an honor bestowed upon selected student-athletes. Selection for
membership is by an athletic department designee in consultation with the individual's
head coach and is based on outstanding scholarship, earned athletic letter, and
excellent character and citizenship. Once selected, members have the responsibility
to continue to demonstrate these qualities.
Section Two:
The athletic department designee shall act as Chapter Advisor and pass on
duties and responsibilities if the position is relinquished.
Section Three: The
student-athlete must meet and fulfill the criteria listed in the
selection process in Article Six, Section One. Candidates become members
when inducted at a special year-end ceremony. Upon initiation each new
member shall receive a certificate.
Section Four: The
college or university name shall serve as each society's chapter name in
addition to its designated Greek alphabet letter(s).
Section Five:
Each year the local chapter shall send its list of new members with
all information requested in the Procedure Section to the National Office.
ARTICLE
SIX
Selection
Section One: Invitation
of student-athletes to membership shall be dependent upon the fulfillment of the following
criteria without regard to sport or gender. The student-athlete:

Must
attend a four-year accredited college or university that is a
member of the NCAA or the NAIA.

Must
have earned a letter in a varsity intercollegiate sport sponsored
by the NCAA or the NAIA.

Must
have achieved at least junior academic standing by the fifth
semester or seventh quarter as determined by the certifying
institution.

Must
have achieved a minimum cumulative grade point average of 3.40 (on a 4.00 scale) or equivalent
grade point average by the time of the selection process. Local
chapters may require a higher minimum cumulative grade point
average, if they so choose.

Must
have endorsement from the head coach of his/her sport.

Must
have official documentation from the registrar's office as to
class standing and grade point average.

Must be
recommended by the college or university Chapter Advisor.

Must be
of good moral character.
Section Two: A
description of the selection procedures and criteria shall be published and made available
to all student-athletes in the college or university's athletic department.
Section Three: After
completing one year of residency and attaining a 3.40 or higher grade
point average, a transfer student is eligible at the certifying
institution for membership.
Section Four: The
recommendation for membership of student-athletes from all sports should
be completed by April 1 or two weeks prior to the induction date.
